Petrolatum

Petrolatum is also known as petroleum jelly and has been around in one for or another since around the 1200's. This is a semi-solid mixture of hydrocrabons and has been approved by the FDA for cosmetic use as an over-the-counter skin protectant. The first produced petrolatum was in 1870 when the company Vaseline started their petroleum jelly production line.  Though this is derived from hydrocarbons petrolatum has to be produced to the appropriate purity levels to ensure consumer safety.
