Citric acid is produced through microbial fermentation with the fungus Aspergillus niger. A carbohydrate substance like molasses is them mixed with Aspergillus niger and citric acid is then produced.

Citric acid is used to create fiz in Grandma's Approved bath bombs. It is also used to add sour taste and acidity to food and beverages. It is also used as a flavor enhancer and helps to prevent spoilage and bacterial growth in foods.
